1973 -2013.Marc Chagall himself was responsible for hanging his works at the museum in 1973. Forty years later, the National Marc Chagall Museum in Nice celebrates it's anniversary, 28 years after the artist's death. At the time of its creation, it was the first museum dedicated to the work of a living artist. Attracting 30,000 visitors per year at the outset, the museum now sees around 180,000 visitors a year, who come to admire some 1,500 works of art which make up the permanent collection.Marking its 40th anniversary, the museum has acquired a new painting, Cranberry Lake, which is a double portrait of Chagall and his beloved wife, Bella. The exhibition, Marc Chagall, from one war to another precedes the major commemorative exhibition of the summer: Marc Chagall, before the mirror: self-portrait images. The end of the year will see an exhibition dedicated to the museum's architecture. The towns of Vence and Saint-Paul-de-Vence, where Chagall lived are also taking part in this anniversary event, organising other exhibitions, including at the Château de Villeneuve in Vence.
